Empire is a company interested solely in making money, and it shows in a variety of ways. Take, for example, when the US military decided to run trials for a new service rifle; Empire generated 5 prototype designs based on its CAPR17 "all-purpose" rifle, each one fitted to a specific role, in the hopes that the government could be swayed to replace their entire arsenal while they were at it. Each one utilized Empire's unique and patented "Needle" rounds, which feature very long and narrow bullets that fly fast and shred armor, but start to drop early in their flight. The CAPR17 was reborn as a modular weapons platform, dubbed the CAP-W17+ (Compact All-Purpose Weapon, 2017; the plus was only there to make it seem better), and its five descendants were as follows:

The smallest, lightest, fastest, and least sturdy of the designs is the Compact Personal Defense Weapon. It fires 2x45mm rounds that suffer short drop-off but slice through armor. It lacks a foregrip and instead features a forward pistol grip located in front of the exceedingly short muzzle, putting the user at risk of muzzle burn.

The next up is the closest to the original CAPR17 design, the CAPR17+. It features the same 2x65mm needle round as the original rifle and the same high magazine capacity, but the internals were given a substantial work-over to put them up to military standards.

Third is the rather contradictory Compact General Purpose Machine Gun, which features a triple-stacked magazine that holds 86 2x65mm rounds in about the same space as the regular 60-round mag, and can be operated by a single infantryman in the same role as a SAW with its integrated monopod.

The CSR is where things start getting interesting. Its caseless 5x80mm rounds pierce material better than the average .50BMG round within its range, but unfortunately that range is about half that of the mighty BMG at 1000 meters. In order to accommodate an integrated scope, the ambidextrous top-mounted charging handle was moved to the flank of the weapon just behind and below the chamber. It features a bipod and rear monopod that extend out of the foregrip and stock, respectively.

Finally, The Experimental Compact Grenade Launcher is an attempt to revolutionize grenade launcher technology. It chambers highly experimental plasma grenades that coat the surrounding area with molten liquid oxygen on impact, starting fires and horribly maiming personnel, and is claimed to be the first step towards directed energy weapons.

Unfortunately, every single one of the designs was rejected because the charging handles kept breaking (and the XCGL violates the Geneva convention, bigtime).

Oh, this is an entry for Fictional-Firearms' variants contest I should note. If you wanna read more(!) about the CAP-W17's gradaddy, the CAPR17, its profile is here: furyextralarge.deviantart.com/…
